Lesson One: Learning to Walk

Old-Time fiddle flatfooting tunes use a walking beat.

Try walking in place to a steady beat.

Start the lesson by dipping both knees together to that beat, at least 8 times. (You're no longer walking at this point!)

Keep dipping your knees to that beat.

Now shift your weight onto your right leg and keep the beat going, dipping the right knee, at least 8 times.

Shift your weight to your left knee. Get comfortable with dipping to the beat on each knee, letting the other knee lift a little on each dip.

Then get into a pattern. Four times on each knee will work. Do that pattern a couple of times then change the pattern to dipping twice with each knee.

Dipping twice with each knee - this is the basic clogging motion, two downbeats on each leg.

Take it yourself from there. Do anything you want, but don't lose that basic dipping motion- twice on each knee.
